Effects of sampling frequency on estimates of dissolved silica export by streams: The role of hydrological variability and concentration-discharge relationships

چکیده
[1] Accurate estimates of solute export are critical for mass balance studies of elemental flux. We explored how variation in hydrology (e.g., flashiness) and concentrationdischarge relationships modulate the effect of solute sampling frequency on bias and precision associated with estimates of dissolved silica export in rivers. Dissolved silica concentration and discharge data from 14 rivers were used to parameterize a nonlinear concentration-discharge model, which was used to generate simulated data for daily dissolved silica concentration for 20 rivers. We determined how solute sampling at various intervals affects bias, precision, and root-mean-square error of export estimates. Bias and coefficient of variation of dissolved silica export increased with coarser sampling intervals. Flashiness and the coefficient of variation of daily discharge typically explained 90% or more of the variation in bias and precision of dissolved silica export, particularly at finer sampling intervals. Our analysis should be useful to researchers and land managers who are planning or evaluating sampling programs to determine solute flux or who seek error estimates for solute export.

Sensitivity of chemical weathering and dissolved carbon dynamics to hydrological conditions in a typical karst river
To better understand the mechanisms that hydrological conditions control chemical weathering and carbon dynamics in the large rivers, we investigated hydrochemistry and carbon isotopic compositions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) based on high-frequency sampling in the Wujiang River draining the carbonate area in southwestern China. Concentrations of major dissolved solute do not strictly f...
متن کاملDeclines in dissolved silica concentrations in western Virginia streams (1988–2003): Gypsy moth defoliation stimulates diatoms?
[1] Dissolved silica concentrations in western Virginia streams showed a significant bias toward declines (p < 0.0001) over the time period from 1988 to 2003. Streams with the greatest declines were those that had the highest mean dissolved silica concentrations, specific to watersheds underlain by basaltic and granitic bedrock. We examined potential geochemical, hydrological, and biological fa...
متن کاملTemporal and spatial variability of dissolved inorganic carbon in a boreal stream network: Concentrations and downstream fluxes
[1] Carbon dioxide (CO2) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations and export were analyzed throughout a 67 km boreal stream network in northern Sweden. 700 DIC and CO2 samples from 14 subcatchments were collected in 2006 and 2007. All sites were consistently supersaturated in CO2 with respect to the atmosphere. Temporal variability of DIC and CO2 concentration was best correlated wit...
متن کاملModelling transport of dissolved silica in a forested headwater catchment: the effect of hydrological and chemical time scales on hysteresis in the concentration-discharge relationship
The relationship between concentration c and discharge Q in a stream is one of the aspects of hydrochemical catchment response that has been used widely as a diagnostic. In particular, loops in the c–Q curve, commonly referred to as hysteresis loops, are used to infer particular mixing patterns. At the South Fork of Brokenback Run (SFBR) in the Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, we have eviden...
متن کاملVariability of DOC and nitrate responses to storms in a small Mediterranean forested catchment
Severe drought periods followed by intense rainfall often leads to major floods in Mediterranean catchments. The resulting hydrology is complex and the response of solutes in the streams is often unpredictable. This study aimed to identify the most relevant factors controlling the hydrological responses to storms of an intermittent Mediterranean stream and to link those factors with dissolved o...
